Robert Palmer vs. Wild Flag

I’ve decided I would not post anything negative without posting something positive to follow up and counter balance. It’s a new energy I’m trying. Hippie BS if you will.

Here’s my beef: Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” video complete with models dressed and dolled up identically, fake-playing their instruments with dead-eyes (BAD).

I can’t help feeling that the concept of hot women playing instruments was supposed to be the big joke of the video. I guess my 2011-glasses are on rather than my 1980s-glasses and I simply fail to see the humor. Besides, there are tons of models who play instruments for real-real not for “play-play”. Let’s take Karen Elson for instance (GOOD)

And then let’s just take Wild Flag’s video for their catchy single “Romance” (GOOD). One of thousands of videos featuring actual lady musicians who manage to not look dead in the eyes and efficiently play their instruments. Of course for bonus points, it needs to be mentioned that this is a supergroup comprised of members of awesome bands: Carrie Brownstein (vocals, guitar - Sleater-Kinney), Mary Timony (vocals, guitar - Helium), Rebecca Cole (keyboards, backing vocals - The Minders) and Janet Weiss (drums, backing vocals - Sleater-Kinney).  I guess it’s the least you can expect out of anyone playing music in 2011. But there’s always exceptions… which I will not mention because I’m going to stick to the “Bad Bad Good” formula. At least just this once.
